The Truth Behind Exams!

The Truth Behind Exams!

- Stuti Viral Dave

Picture this: it’s exam season, and you have a physics test on a concept you barely understood. Most people that find themselves in this situation would do the obvious thing – study! Pens, books, highlighters, sticky notes, and so much more would be found in a massive mess in their bedrooms, with the kids stuffing their brains with far too much information at once. But what if I told you that was all wrong? In fact, it’s totally against the purpose of exams!

To learn more about this controversy, first we need to find the exact definition of an exam. According to the Collins Dictionary, an exam is a formal test taken to demonstrate knowledge or ability in a specific subject or to obtain a qualification. How does a student demonstrate what they know and understand? Well, I can say for sure that the answer is NOT by memorising at the last minute.

Most schools tell the students in advance when their exams are and what they're about. Exams are about what you understand and what you find fuzzy. If one is pre-informed about a test, then they can just memorise all the facts and forget them after the exam. Do they really grasp the topic? Well, I guess we will never know.

What is a better alternative to the atrocious, stressful tasks exams have now become? I say they are surprise assessments! Random, unplanned checks of what a kid has learnt so far are way more convenient and show if someone can comprehend what is being taught or if they are just blankly nodding. Surprise tests are a great way of acknowledging truthful pupils.

In my opinion, exams are nothing demanding. They are just a part of learning that helps determine whether you know or don’t know something. The exams that most schools follow are serious and scary, but they’re really just a way for teachers to check on you and help you with what you study. After all, kids are the future! You can never be too small to create change!
